Loving Others Like You’ve Never Been Hurt

I recently listened to a sermon by Pastor Miles McPherson from The Rock Church based out of San Diego, CA (highly recommend checking him out) about loving others and how “love wins”. Hearing this particular sermon led me to want to write and share several concepts that I took away from hearing him speak that I believe may be beneficial to you as well. 3 things I want to communicate from this post are: 1) God calls us to love everyone. 2) Why we should display God’s love towards everyone. 3) God’s love is the only true, genuine type of love.

1.) God calls us to love others INCLUDING our enemies. God calls us to love others no matter how much they may hurt you, no matter how much they may have wronged you, and no matter how much they are mean to you. I’ll be the first to admit that this is one of the more difficult concepts for me to put into practice, but day by day it does get easier as long as you put in conscientious effort.

John 13:34-35 “A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.”

2.) Why should we display God’s love towards everyone? I can understand how unreasonable this may sound at first. How can one display love towards their enemy or someone they find irritating? I’m sure it may seem impossible. I won’t say that it is not difficult because it is very difficult, but very satisfying in God’s eyes. Being able to love is only possible because love comes FROM God. Showing God’s love shows others the impact that Jesus Christ had on us. During Jesus Christ’s time on Earth, people constantly slandered his name and mocked him. Yet, He was willing to die for EVERYONE because through it all, Jesus loves us. How powerful is it that even though we are not perfect and not sinless, the God of the universe and King of Kings was still willing to die for us?

Romans 5:8 “God shows His love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.”

3.) God’s love is the only true, genuine type of love. Anything besides that cannot be considered love. God is the God of second chances. No matter how much we may rebel and sin, God is always ready to forgive and welcome us if we repent and commit our lives to God. This has taught me to give people another chance even if they may not deserve one. Once you experience receiving or giving God’s love to someone else, there is no other feeling like it. You may not gain anything in return from them, but I can assure you that is okay. I am confident in saying that you will receive satisfaction from God and what can be better than that?

I hope this post will serve as encouragement to not meet anger with anger, but to meet it with God’s love. I know it’s difficult as there have been times where I have messed up in regard to this as well. I also hope this post will help others believe in second chances. Everyone changes throughout their lives and we all learn through our mistakes. Above all, if you are having difficulty with this, don’t be afraid to reach out and ask me to pray for you! We’re all here for the same purpose and I would love to be on that journey with you.
